Facebook relationship status, DOMA and B2B Relationships

With the latest “Facebook relationship status” categories(February 2011) and the Government decision today that it will no longer defend the Marriage Act or DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) B2B marketing thought is truly at a cross-roads. Because ever since Dwyer,Schurr and Oh’s 1987 article on relationship marketing, the customer funnel has been seen as B2B partners proceeding through the following relationship phases viz. 1) Awareness 2) Exploration 3) Expansion 4) Commitment. The parallel logic is based on the sociology of the traditional marriage starting with exploring possible mates, dating, engagement and marriage.CRM systems speak to this kind of linear view and to some extent SRM systems also take such a perspective.

Google vs. Facebook is about competition vs. co-operation

Google in 2011 (February 17, 2011)is getting weaker than Facebook according to Fortune. At the crux of this phenomenon is competition vs, co-operation. Because “organizing the world’s information” essentially is about an Internet searching individual’s ( a competitive trait) ability to now share that search’s most relevant results with her/his friends via Facebook that appeals to the searcher’s co-operative spirit.

How does innovation create jobs? – The Music Industry example

But there comes a point when unless you change the technology platform you can only do so much. My favorite example is the vinyl records->music cassette -> disc-> MP3 music platforms. Just the number of songs you could fit in into a device has jumped exponentially, industries like cassette tape makers are extinct but their place is taken by an entire cell phone industry that offers MP3 music- famously led by the iPod and iPhone.

When a market like India booms in everything from automobiles, roads , buildings including homes and offices and their cleaning and maintenance -it’s interesting to observe that practically no one does any DIY with the stuff they own.
